Chemical Dependency Counseling and Relapse Prevention

Counselors want to help each patient understand the physical and mental consequences of substance abuse and teach patients ways to restore physical health while learning to recognize and stop behaviors and symptoms that can lead to relapse. Doctors motivate patients to accept and enjoy long term recovery through supportive individual and group education. Psychologists offer education about alcoholism and addiction. During treatment, patients learn various methods of healing and find what technique works for rehabilitation including: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing and general education around staying sober. Occasional meetings with alumni afford the patients the opportunity to hear success stories and learn about the experience of sobriety. Before leaving treatment, doctors give patients an individual relapse prevention plan, including helpful techniques and a comprehensive list of appropriate support systems to help maintain sobriety.

Acne Vulgaris

Changes in the pilosebaceous units (skin structures consisting of a hair follicle and the associated subcutaneous gland) result in acne vulgaris. Severe acne is inflammatory, but acne can also manifest in non-inflammatory forms. Acne lesions are pimples, spots or zits. Acne is most common during adolescence, affecting more than affecting more than 85 percent of teenagers, and frequently continues into adulthood. For most people, acne diminishes over time and tends to disappear, or at the very least decrease after the early twenties. There is, however, no way to predict how long acne can take to disappear entirely, and some individuals continue to suffer well into their thirties, forties and beyond. Most commonly, the face and upper neck regions are affected, but there may be acne on the chest, back and shoulders as well. Acne may appear on the upper arms, but lesions found there are often keratosis pilaris, not acne. Typical acne lesions are comedones, inflammatory papules, pustules and nodules. Care of the fingernails and toenails is important. Poor nail care causes problems. Recommendations for maintaining nail health include: keeping nails clean and dry in order to keep bacteria and other infectious organisms from collecting under the nails; cutting nails straight across with only slight rounding at the tip; using a fine-textured file to keep nails shaped and free of snags; and avoiding nail-biting. Nail changes, swelling and pain can signal serious problems that may require a physician and medical nail care. Medical nail care includes preventing and treating diseases. Nail diseases are distinct from diseases of the skin. Although nails are a skin appendage, they have their own signs and symptoms, which can relate to other medical conditions. Nail conditions that show signs of infection or inflammation require medical assistance beyond a beauty parlor. Deformity or diseases of the nails are onychosis. Onychia is an inflammation of the nail folds of the nail with formation of pus and shedding of the nail. Onychia results from the introduction of microscopic pathogens through small wounds. The medical term for ingrown nails is onychocryptosis. Ingrown nails can affect the fingers and the toes. With this condition, the nail cuts into one or both sides of the nail bed, resulting in inflammation and possibly infection. The relative rarity of this condition in the fingers suggests that pressure from the ground or shoe against the toe is a prime cause. The movements involved in walking or other physical disturbances can contribute to the problem. Mild onychocryptosis in the absence of infection is treatable by trimming and rounding the nail. In more advanced cases including infection, doctors perform matrixectomy by surgically excising the in growing portion of the nail down to its bony origin and thermally or chemically cauterizing the matrix to prevent recurrence. The best results are by cauterizing the matrix with phenol.

Vitiligo

Vitiligo or leukoderma is a chronic skin disease that causes loss of pigment, resulting in irregular pale patches of skin. The precise cause of vitiligo is complex and not fully understood. There is some evidence that suggests a combination of autoimmune, genetic and environmental factors causes vitiligo. The incidence of vitiligo worldwide is between one and two percent. According to the Diseases Database, the disorder appears in of areas of macular depigmentation, commonly on extensor aspects of extremities, on the face or neck, and in skin folds. The age of onset is often in young adulthood and the condition tends to progress gradually with lesions enlarging and extending until a quiescent state is reached. Half of the people living with vitiligo develop patches of de-pigmented skin appearing on extremities before their 20s. The patches may grow, shrink or remain constant in size. Patches often occur symmetrically across both sides on the body. Occasionally small areas may re-pigment as they are recolonised by melanocytes.
