Older Adult Addiction Treatments
The aging of baby boomers results in a higher number of elderly people and aging adults. Older adults with a history of lifetime drug use, plus different cultural norms and general attitudes about drug use, and increases in the availability of psychotherapeutic medications, may cause a higher number of older adults with substance use problems. Although no drug treatment programs exclusively target older adults, research to date indicates that current addiction treatment programs can be as effective for older adults as for younger adults. However, substance abuse problems in older adults often go unrecognized and therefore untreated.
Michael Siegel
Michael Siegel has a deep interest in fine art, which dates back to his early childhood, and it was at the age of 14 that he took his first serious steps towards becoming a professional artist. He studied figure drawing and portraiture in Milwaukee and Los Angeles under such luminaries as James Prohl and Glenn Vilppu. The pivotal moment in his studies came in 1998, when at the age of 18 he attended a painting seminar taught by Gregg Kreutz of the New York Art Students' League, who introduced him to the chiaroscuro style of the old Dutch Masters. Since then, Michael has studied privately under the incomparable David Leffel, formerly of the Art Students League in New York, who is the 20th Century Old Master. "Painting, as a discipline, is governed by an inherently beautiful logic, and it is through the understanding of this logic that the painter can achieve beauty on the canvas." Born in 1979, the youngest son to a violinist father and artist mother, Michael grew up drawing from a very early age. With an interest in becoming an animator, Michael spent his high school years in Los Angeles studying anatomy and figure drawing under leaders in the field. It was not until the age of 18, however, when Michael went to his first painting workshop that he knew he had found his calling. Known now for his still life, portraiture and figure painting, Michael uses a dramatic "chiaroscuro" (or "light and shadow") approach to create powerful and moving paintings. At his young age, Michael earned honors at many national exhibitions, and galleries across the USA and the world have featured his work. Currently, Michael resides in Los Angeles. http://www.siegelfineart.com/

Drug addiction is a complex characterized by intense and at times uncontrollable drug craving, along with compulsive drug seeking and use that persist even in the face of devastating consequences. Pax Prentiss Many people do not realize that addiction is a brain condition. While the path to drug addiction begins with the act of taking drugs, over time the ability of a person to choose not to do so becomes compromised and seeking and consuming the drug becomes compulsive. This behavior results largely from the effects of prolonged drug exposure on brain functioning. Pax Prentiss Addiction affects multiple brain circuits, including those involved in reward and motivation, learning and memory and inhibitory control over behavior. Some individuals are more vulnerable than others to becoming addicted, depending on genetic makeup, age of exposure to drugs, other environmental influences and the interplay of all these factors. Pax Prentiss Addiction is often more than just compulsive drug taking it can also produce far-reaching consequences. For example, drug abuse and addiction increase a person’s risk for a variety of other mental and physical illnesses related to a drug-abusing lifestyle or the toxic effects of the drugs themselves. Pax Prentiss A wide range of dysfunctional behaviors can result from drug abuse and interfere with normal functioning in the family, the workplace and the broader community. Because drug abuse and addiction have so many dimensions and disrupt so many aspects of an individual’s life, treatment is not simple. Pax Prentiss Effective treatment programs typically incorporate many components, each directed to a particular aspect of the illness and its consequences. Addiction treatment must help the individual stop using drugs, maintain a drug-free lifestyle and achieve productive functioning in the family, at work and in society. Pax Prentiss
Family Physicians
Family physicians deliver a range of acute, chronic and preventive medical care services. In addition to diagnosing and treating illness, they also provide preventive care, including routine checkups, health-risk assessments, immunization and screening tests, and personalized counseling on maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Family physicians also manage chronic illness, often coordinating care provided by other sub-specialists. Family medicine and family physicians play a very important role in the healthcare system of a country. In the USA, for example, nearly one in four of all office visits are to family physicians. A general practitioner is a medical practitioner who treats acute and chronic illnesses and provides preventive care and health education for all ages and both sexes. They have particular skills in treating people with multiple health issues and comorbidities. Family medical practitioners must then complete three to four years of additional residency in family medicine. Three hundred hours of medical education within the prior six years are also required to be eligible to sit for the board certification exam; these hours are during residency training. Family physicians will see anyone with any problem and are experts in common problems. Many family physicians deliver babies in addition to taking care of patients of all ages. In order to become board certified, family physicians must complete a residency in family medicine, possess a full and unrestricted medical license, and take a written cognitive examination. The American Board of Family Medicine, as well as other specialty boards, is requiring additional participation in continuous learning and self-assessment to enhance clinical knowledge, expertise and skills. Family physicians may pursue fellowships in diverse topics including adolescent medicine, geriatric medicine, sports medicine, sleep medicine, and hospice and palliative medicine.
